81. Japanese Tanbark Oak

This evergreen relative of the oaks and chestnuts is intermediate between them with chestnut-like flowers and oak-like acorns. Although introduced from the Orient many years ago it is not commonly grown although it is a very handsome and densely foliaged medium sized tree. Several fine specimens are on the grounds of the former U.S. plant introduction station (AKA the Bamboo Farm) south of Savannah.
