52. Lace Parasol Winged Elm

The original tree of this unusual and striking weeping or pendulous mutant of our native Winged Elm was originally found in the wild near Chapel Hill, North Carolina in the 1940’s. Moved to a residence, it grew there until 1992 when the owner died and left it to the J.C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh. The original specimen was moved to the arboretum where it grows today. This specimen, high grafted on ordinary Winged Elm, was given to Aiken by our friend Ted Stephens at Nurseries Caroliniana in North Augusta, SC.
