5. Slash Pine

Named for early South Carolina botanist Stephen Elliott, Slash Pine is an important pine grown for pulp and lumber. Its fast growth and dense foliage also earn Slash Pine favor as an ornamental tree. It is native from southeastern South Carolina to Florida and Mississippi but is widely planted for timber and pulp outside its native range. The South Florida Slash Pine is sometimes considered a separate species. This and all eleven pine species native to the southern U.S. are represented in our Citywide Arboretum".
