36. Ginkgo

Ginkgo is an esteemed street tree tolerant to urban pollution and abuse. It has existed for over 150 million years being known from fossils in North America and Europe. Long cultivated in China and Japan, it was long believed to be extinct in the wild. Female trees are undesirable in the landscape due to the sticky foul smelling fruits. however the nut-like seed within the fruits are edible when roasted.
