29. American Holly

American Holly is a familiar native tree frequently seen as a hedge or specimen tree. Its scarlet fruits and evergreen foliage are used in holiday decorations. It is also exploited for its rich, white wood, much desired in cabinetwork as inlays and for carving. The wood dyes nicely, accepting even a black stain. The fruits, which are borne on female plants, are an important food source for wildlife.
