100. Crape Myrtle

Introduced from France by Andre Michaux into Charleston in the late 1700’s, Crape Myrtle was long grown in India but has its true origins in China. This was unknown to early European botanists (thus, the species name indica). Numerous cultivars and hybrids with Japanese Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia faurei) are available in a wide range of growth habits and flower colors.
