You're now standing in front of a Round Lobed Sweetgum tree. The sweetgum is a large deciduous tree common over much of the eastern U.S. It is an important timber tree and is frequently grown as a shade tree or street tree. The star-shaped leaves have five pointed lobes and often give good fall color. The prickly one inch diameter fruits, known as gumballs, however are an unwelcome nuisance on lawns. This curious form with rounded rather than pointed lobes on the leaves was discovered about 1930 near Cameron, North Carolina. It is apparently fruitless and has found favor for that reason.
